Before we launch into this subject I want to take a couple of steps back.
What are OKRs?
If we don’t understand this we can’t really make an informed decision as to the most appropriate OKR software. If you’re not familiar with the methodology then Roger’s blog “What are OKRs and how can they help my business?” is well worth a read.Fundamentally it’s a goal setting methodology that enhances performance management. When choosing OKR software we should be looking to ensure that it improves this process bringing more focus, alignment and engagement.
Why use Software?
Generally, software should make a process easier and more efficient to manage, not get lost in its own functionality. User experience is everything. So when choosing OKR software the overriding questions are: Will the software make us more effective in managing the OKR process? Will we achieve our desired results and outcomes more efficiently and effectively? Now to the specifics of OKR software; the top 8 must haves are: 1 – Accessibility. Whilst there is usually one OKR champion in the organisation, we’re talking about engaging teams. So, the ability to have multiple users, without breaking the bank, is a critical. 2 – Engaging We’re looking to get teams engaged in a process, so it’s important that the software is interesting and engaging. If the teams are turned off by the look of the OKR software then they are unlikely to engage with it. 3 – Ease of use Managing the software shouldn’t become a project in itself. 4 – Integration Companies use a myriad of software, so its important that the OKR software has the functionality to integrate with other applications. For me it’s critical that the accounting software integrates. This means that the OKRs can sit alongside KPIs on a dashboard, giving full visibility to the performance of the organisation. Depending on the stage of your business, it might be just as important to integrate with the CRM system and social media channels. 5 – Value for money When introducing the methodology there is usually a budget committee to work through. The OKR software shouldn’t require a budget of its own; it should be accessibly priced. The ability to add features, so that over time there is more functionality, is part of this value for money criteria. 6 – Visualisation of Results It should be easy to see progress against results, at a glance and in real time. 7 – Parent and Child Visualisation. Very often there will be parent and child objectives. It’s important that the OKR software has a clear visualisation of the relationship between these objectives. Teams and individuals should be able to clearly see the impact of their performance on the higher objectives. 8 – Prioritisation The OKR methodology is all about spotlighting and being focused. The OKR software should enhance the process by enabling prioritisation of objectives in a specific sprint period. We work with a number of software partners, but don’t favour one over another. It’s all about choosing OKR software that is most relevant to your individual Company’s needs. This blog should point you in the right direction when making your choice, but we’d love to talk to you if you need more help or just want to chat about the OKR methodology. The Giants are here to make a difference.
